Been using Home Premium SP1 32 bit for several months, file copying
seems way slower than XP and it crashes a lot for no apparent reason.
I mostly use for web surfing and downloading music and some work
related document writing. I've been thinking of trying Ubuntu, since
Vista doesn't seem stable. Opinions?

More information is needed, please.

I copy large files all of the time to and from external USB HDrives and I
have no problem with Vista Home Premium SP1. It's just as fast as XP.
Sometimes faster.
It does get slow when I do a direct tranfer or copy of video files from one
USB external HD to another USB external HD. Each HD is hooked up on USB ports
on opposite sides of the laptop.

Sinner,

Ease up there, someone thinking of using Ubuntu because problems their
having with Vista sure the heck don't make them a Troll. Offering help to
the OP is far more productive than the name calling.

The slow file copying is still a Vista problem.

What do you mean by "it crashes"? Provided the hardware and drivers are OK,
Vista is extremely robust and extremely difficult to crash.* Are you
referring to genuine blue-screen-of-death Vista crashes? Or crashes of the
programs you use?

SteveT

*That is a big "provided", of course. But the VAST majority of Vista
crashes are caused by bad hardware or bad drivers.

It is a known problem in Vista pre SP1 but now works great with SP1...
When updating to SP1 did you make sure thing like your antivirus where OFF?
If not remove it close all background programs and clean up temp files then
re-install SP1 with all updates...

Here is a link that may help you with other things it could be......

Slow File and Folder Copy, Move, Transfer or Delete Operation Speed Problem
in Vista Fix

BTW Ubunto is crap if you want to try a good linux try Debian, You can
download an ISO that you can boot to from a CD
and check it out before ever loading it on your PC... It has a very good
version of free office and does NOT need antivirus
but is a HUGE learning curve... Best thing is that it is all free and use
the KDE module it feels more like windows, Gnome is more
for the power user...
http://www.debian.org/

Here is a cool vid to check out for people that think linux is very
plain...
WINDOWS VISTA AERO VS LINUX UBUNTU BERYL
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC5uEe5OzNQ
You can add the same type of features to Debian...

And to all of you Nix haters you know where to put it...
I am not promoting Nix just giving some options and sharing some info to
someone in need...

Downloading music via P2P is a surefire way to pick up crap that will slow
your machine up and cause it to crash..

Run spyware removal procedures and see what happens..

Like a true MS fanboy, Mike assumes that the poster is using something
like eMule when, in fact, it could be iTunes which doesn't carry and
malware. Why is it that the MS fanboys always assume that posters are
doing something illegal? I guess they subscribe to the same crap that
WPA and WGA stand for: guilty until proven innocent.

Well, file copying has been a problem for many. Considering that moving
data is a fundamental requirement for any OS this is really not good.
Part of the problem seems t be "Explorer" which falls over where other
methods do not and part of the problem is within the OS itself. In fact
W2000 and XP had the "Explorer" problem too. I had two stable Vista
machines for a few months until I installed SP1, both are now showing
different problems and as of last night one refuses to boot at all.

As to the other comments about Ubuntu and other Linux in general I'd say
this. If you want a basic but solid OS then Debian is probably the
choice, but is a little harder to get running. Ubuntu is more "Fancy"
but just as with Windows the more flashy stuff that gets installed the
greater the chance of a fault causing you to lose stability. In general
though Ubuntu is still far more stable than Vista. Don't fall into the
trap of installing "Everything" - you will end up with some stuff that
simply does not work well.

Because in many cases they are is why.. note that I used the term 'many' and
not 'all'
