Alternatively,
Access the Hotmail account in the iPhone browser.
Fyi...the Outloook method is the long hand method. You may be abled to
import those contacts into Windows 7 (the Windows Contacts folder is still
present and provided for upgrades from Vista which used that folder for
WM). iTunes will import contacts from the Windows Contacts folder (i.e.
negating the need to purchase Outlook or download a trial version). If one
is going to use Outlook, they might just as well install the Outlook
Connector for Hotmail, set up the Live ID account in the Connector which
will pull the Live contacts (from contacts.live.com) into Outlook as a
unique contact list separate from Outlook's contacts.

OK, with the help of a couple blogs and Microsoft's website, I was able to
finally successfully import into my iPhone/iPod Touch my Windows Live Mail
contacts. The results aren't perfect, but I'd still consider it excellent
at
about 95% accuracy. Here are the steps that need to be done:
1. Export your Windows Live Mail contacts to a CSV file. Be sure that file
is named WLMContacts.csv.
2. Import the above WLMContacts.csv file into your Outlook contacts area.
If
you already have an Outlook contacts list which is valuable, and you don't
want it overwritten, you'll need to save it as a new contact list.
3. Hook up your iPhone or Touch to your computer. Then go to the tab "Info"
| place a checkmark in "Sync contacts w/Outlook." If you want to replace
all
the contact info on your Apple device with that contained within your .csv
file, scroll down to "Advanced" and then checkmark "Contacts." Think about
that move first, as the above action will replace all your existing contact
information, and you may not want to do that especially if some it's newer
than what's in your newly created .csv file. If you don't want all your
contact info overwritten like that, just don't place a checkmark there.
Only downside is that your Apple device is importing your Outlook Contacts
info. Since you're probably not updating your contacts within Outlook, but
are continuing to use Windows Live Mail for your contact info, your Apple
device won't be updating with the latest data. The only workaround I can
see
is to occasionally re-create a new .csv file and then go thru the above
steps again. It's not as bad as it seems, and is pretty logical once you do
it.
If you'd like more detailed step-by-step, e-mail me (DanK5 at mail that's
hot dot com) and I'll write it out; the above steps are generally what has
to be done.

You are understanding correctly.
Even with Mobile Me, it won't sync your Windows Live contacts with your
iPhone/iPad. At least not anyway that I could find that didn't make a
mess,
or not at all. That was a while back though and there may be a new
solution
for you I am hoping.
I gave up and went with MobileMe.
With Windows Vista and Windows Mail they all synced together fine (desktop,
iPhone, iPad) but once I started using Windows 7 and Windows Live Mail
they
will not all sync together. I have to enter a new contact in Windows Live
Mail contacts and again either on the iPhone or the iPad or on the MobileMe
web site.

Thanks for the detailed reply! I did already convert contacts to CSV and
that didn't solve it, as was your experience. I was afraid I'd have to
enter
my contacts manually, but I'll hold off on that project for awhile in hopes
someone does have an export solution. The problem of course with doing it
manually is that as changes/additions are made on one's computer with
Windows Live, you don't have that nice feature of the changed/added info
syncing with your iPhone. And if I understand you correctly, even with
Mobile Me, that won't sync your Windows Live contacts with your
iPhone/iPad,
right (syncing only between your iPhone and iPad)? Again, thanks for the
reply!

I had this dilemma a while back and it was a garbled mess!
In contacts you can export your contacts either in CSV or VCards. I tried
both and like I said it was a mess. I ended up having to enter each
contact
manually into my iPhone which was a long project but once it was done it
was
just that. DONE! I have a Mobile Me account and now all my contacts sync
over the air automatically to both my iPhone and iPad with no problem. If
anyone has a solution I am sure it would help a lot! Also, before when I
had Vista and Windows Mail, my contact would sync nicely with my iPhone but
now with Windows Live that feature is gone but like I said, I have MobileMe
now so that problem is eliminated.
GOOD LUCK!

I have a simple question for which I’ve tried for a long time to do this:
how do I export and sync my Windows Live Contact List to my iPhone/iPod
Touch? My most recent attempt was using MS Sync Center, and Sync Center won’t
recognize my iPhone/iPod Touch 4. Do I have to do it by importing my
contact
list via my iPhone/iPod Touch? If so, I can’t find where I’m guided to do
that. Thanks for any help!
