Greetings Ruby,
I was also against the forced upgrade, but I'm afraid it went ahead anyway. They actually
have been forcing other versions prior to 8.5 for months, this is just the latest phase of
the forced upgrade process.
They won't stop the upgrade now sadly, as the sole reason is due to a security hole within
one of the libraries Messenger uses.
There are some ways to make 8.5 work again depending on what Windows version you're using
and/or if you wish to modify your Messenger executable. However, in some cases it may impair
functionality and does leave you open to that security risk (albeit a small risk).
