Importing Pictures with Windows

I'm new to Vista. When I import pictures from my camera using windows all
pictures in the Pictures folder are format .jpe and are very small (about
25 - 30 KB). The actual pictures on the camera are jpg and are full size
(about 1200KB). Why don't the full pictures download? If I edit these tiny
pictures, have I lost the full pictures?
