Impossible to change Messenger picture in Windows Live

I have a very annoying problem with the Messenger picture: An old picture
(which I no longer want to use) from Windows Live Messenger is still showing
up if my contacts click on my Windows Live name in their contact list. This
old picture is also the one which shows up if a contact clicks in my name in
Messenger when I am not logged in. Whne I am logged in my normal picture is
displayed in Messenger.

I have tried in vain to change this by adjusting the settings in my Windows
Live profile, but it does not seem to work.

I really need help!

I should add that this old picture also is the one that is displayed to
others when I log in from the web or from my mobile phone. Extremely
annoying!

Hi, I posted more or less the same question just over a week ago an
still await a solution. What is more I have Microsoft Windows Liv
Technical help working the same problem. They have actively provide
work around solutions, but to date none have worked. Their first attemp
was the FULL UNINSTALL methodology and of course re-install. Thi
failed to change anything and I had attempted this myself several time
previous. You may find (like me) it is possible to change your pictur
in Safe Mode Networking (Networking is important of course) bu
unfortunately, when returning to normal mode the picture reverts onc
more. In my case the WLM default icon, or presumably in yours an ol
picture. As I found out by the safe mode myself I have just advise
Microsoft Support of this fact and await an answer.

I will let you know if a solution is provided and await to see i
anyone in the forum has any ideas what is amiss. Incidentally (in m
case) there are 2 others computers in the house, one with Vista th
other with XP and neither have any problems in changing the picture i
WLM. It has only happened since I upgraded to Windows 7

Sorrry I was so anxious to advise I had the same problem that I did no
check the date of your own posting several months ago. Perhaps then yo
found a solution yourself. If so would be pleased to know what it was.

Thank you for sharing your experience. But no - the answers to my pevious
posting did not solve the problem, not for me nor for my friend.

I'm using WLM 2009 (build 14.0.8089.726) with Windows XP SP 3.

Hi there thanks for getting back to me.

I have now heard from others (on other forums) experiencing the same o
very similar problems. Since posting I have just had a further respons
from Windows Live Support requesting System Information and certain MS
specific files & Contact information all with precise instruction how t
locate, compress and send as email attachments. I must give them thei
due and I sense they also seem to want to get to the bottom of th
matter. I will keep you informed in due course, but might take som
while.

Greetings,

Just out of curiosity, are you sure its all your contacts, and not just one in particular?

I could think of a scenario where the cache Messenger stores your image (on your contacts'
end) when you're offline couldn't save the latest image for some reason, but might still grab
the latest directly from you when you're online.

Thanks for the info, however I seem to have not made it clear that
although I posted to say I had a 'similar' problem to Hans, mine is that
I cannot change my own image in WLM. It currently shows the default MSN
type icon and nothing I do will allow me to change this to my own
picture, whether by browsing for a photo on my computer or via a webcam
shot. The 'change picture' action is not available for some reason.

I think Hans posted that he wants to change an old picture (of himself)
to a new one, but is unable to perform the action. This is why I believe
we share the same problem of being unable to change a picture.
Something I have done many times before on other PC's/laptops running XP
& Vista, but for some reason cannot do since my upgrade to Windows 7
with the the 2009 Windows Live Messenger.

Live Messenger support are currently looking into my own problem, and
providing any solution is not something specific to my Compaq Presario
may well help others. For this reason I will pass on any helpful
information received from Microsoft.

Well, this might be a possibility, but it cannot be someting cached on the
particular contact's computer, but rather on the WLM servers.

I say this because I have a second WLM account where this phenomenon
appears, despite the fact that all Messenger/WLM cache folders are cleaned.
It even appears when I log in on Web Messenger from this account: then I see
the old picture even when my normal account is logged in on WLM with another
picture. To check, I also created a third Windows Live account - but there
no picture appears.

This indicates that contacts that were established when the old picture was
current will have this picture stored in their avccount on the WLM servers -
right?
