Inaccurate online status

At least one of my contacts continues to appear 'online' after i know they
have logged off. Anybody know why messenger still thinks they are logged in
and is still showing status 'online' even they are not. i know this happens
for at least one of my contacts, cannot say for sure if it happens for
others. I will start paying attention to others. Any ideas would be
appreciated. THX
