Any chance you have an AntiVirus application setup to scan your email?

The whole point is these symptoms are common to AntiVirus email scanners
that develop a problem (which they all do, eventually). Trend is no
exception to this, if its scanning your email, it is the likely culprit.
Check its setup to see if it is scanning your email; if it is, uninstall it,
then do a custom re-install without any email scanning components and see if
the problem persists. Email scanning is redundant, all it does is cause
problems, and your system is fully protected without it, provided you keep
the resident file system scanner up to date.

With any luck, both problems will go away. If this is the result of a
runaway A/V scanner, removing its ability to deal with email should stop the
bombardment and allow your password to save. There is also a quirk in
Windows Mail that makes it tend to forget the password whenever logging in
with its remembered username and password fails, for example because the
server is down. There's another quirk that often makes it forget the
password if you put a checkmark in the "Remember password" checkbox AND
click the "Apply" button in the same session. To correct these, go to
'Tools|Accounts|(the affected account)|Properties|Servers( or Server)'. If
the "Remember Password" checkbox is already checked, leave it alone. If
not, click on this box, then OK, then Close, then start over. When you
return to this screen, check if the username needs changing. If it does,
click at the end of it, backspace over it, then type the correct username.
Assume that the password needs changing also, so click at the end of it,
backspace over it, then type the correct password, then click Apply, then
OK, then Close.

It sounds like you are having multiple email problems, so it is best
to solve the most serious one first. Who is your mail provider?
Use your browser to login to your provider's webmail, and see if
the unwanted messages are there also. If so, notice what is common
about those messages, then create a filter rule to block those
messages. Ask your provider for help, if necessary.
