Incompatible version of the serializing package. (0x80070724)

I have Vista Home Premium 6.0 (build 6000) with all the updates. All of
a sudden (after some update?), Windows Backup is no longer working and I
get the error message: "Incompatible version of the serializing package.
(0x80070724)"
I did look it up in Google and in the knowledge base, and there seems to
be a solution (very complicated, IMHO), but not for my version.
Any suggestions?

Uninstall the recent updates. Restart. If this solves your problem,
reinstall one at a time, testing as you go, until you find the culprit.
For future reference, do not automatically install updates. Choose "Download
updates for me, but let me choose when to install them"
