Inconsistent functionality of USB mouse in VISTA with Intellipoint

Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 using Intellipoint 6.1 driver software
(with dual receiver - also runs
Laser Keyboard 6000 v2 - both are certified for VISTA)

I have not been able to consistently use the full features of my USB mouse.
I have been dealing with Microsoft and HP about this issue for a couple of
weeks now to no resolve. Needless to say I have tried the 'obvious':
googling, un/reinstalling driver software, un/reinstalling USB Root Hub,
using mouse on another PC, move plug to different USB port, update bios,
update intel inf drivers, safe mode, fresh install of OS, etc. Also tried
the following suggestions listed on these pages:

The following issues are intermittent:

-accelerated vertical scrolling stops working
-very slow to no vertical scrolling in OneNote 2007 (yet functions in all
other Office 2007 apps.)
-significant changes in responsiveness (see below)

The mouse fluctuates between a fully functional state (all features of the
mouse work as advertised) to partial functionality (above issues). As such I
am continuously changing the mouse properties between operational states as
it is very sensitive when it is working. Sometimes, not always, when coming
out of SLEEP mode the mouse is temporarily restored to a fully functional
state but eventually reverts back to a crippled state. It has never worked
with full functionality when resuming from a restart. After reinstalling the
OS and when the mouse was functioning properly I created a restore point and
registry backup. When it reverted back to a crippled state I restored the
registry to no effect then did a system restore also to no effect.

Something that came up during one of the diagnostic tests (dxdiag) was the
mouse being listed as a PS/2 device - not USB. When I mentioned this to the
Microsoft tech he was concerned about this yet didn't know how to proceed and
said he would research it further. Still waiting to hear back... I have
disabled PS/2 devices through the BIOS yet according to the dxdiag log the
mouse continues to register as a PS/2 device.

The Microsoft tech this should have no effect. Surprisingly when changing
from a 'Wireless Laser Mouse 6000' to a 'Trackball Optical' the accelerated
scrolling feature works but scrolling in OneNote remains choppy and very slow
no matter how you adjust the settings. Any suggestions on how to proceed is
appreciated.

Possible Causes

This issue can occur due to the following reasons.

-Wireless Interference.
-Depleted batteries.
-Loss of Synchronization.
-Use of Port Replicators, hubs, and third party adapters etc

Suggestions

Perform these troubleshooting steps and this may help in resolving the issue.

Step 1: Check for Interference:
------------------------------------------
Items such as Radio, Cell Phones, desktop fans, Fluorescent lights, Large metal objects,
including computer cases and metal furniture may interfere with the signal of the mouse.
Please keep the items away from the mouse and check the behavior of the mouse.

If you have connected the receiver using a green USB to PS/2 converter, then please
try removing the adapter and connect the USB connector directly.

Step 2: Use fresh Energizer batteries:

Let us ensure to remove the existing set of batteries from the mouse compartment
and insert a new set of AA Alkaline batteries. Now see how the mouse works.

In case the issue persists, proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Try on different ports:

Let us try the connection scenarios as mentioned in method 1 of the following
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:

to synchronize the keyboard with the receiver.

One thing I would do is try another mouse to see if the same thing
happens.

Thanks for trying. Interference and batteries were ruled out as they were
obvious candidates.
I mentioned I had already tried Microsoft hardware support and switching the
plug to different USB ports.

I have tried 2 other USB mice (Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical USB & Microsoft
Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 - also USB). Both register as PS/2 devices
according to the dxdiag (DirectX10 diagnostic) log.

Well what were the results? Same thing happen?

Have you installed the latest Windows Vista drivers for
your video adapter? You may have an issue with the video
adapter itself.

Yes. Both of the other USB devices are registered as PS/2 and both suffer
the same partial functionality - though I can't say the problem is
intermittent with these other mice since I don't use either of these with
regularity on the VISTA box. What is unclear to me - and what neither the
Microsoft tech nor the HP tech could tell me is the significance and
consequence of USB input devices being incorrectly registered as PS/2
devices. If I plug any of the 3 mice into an XP box they are all correctly
registered as UBS devices and all mouse features function fully and
consistently. What is also puzzling is that ocassionally the Laser 6000
mouse will work with full functionality on the VISTA box. That is what is so
frustrating - knowing how it can be so responsive and smooth yet only lasting
till the next reboot. Rebooting consistently reverts the mouse back to a
crippled state and it can take several days (if the box is left on 24/7
before its starts working like it was designed to. I hesitate to mention
this cause I suspect it will confound the issue - but as soon as the
Intellimouse software is uninstalled the mouse sensitivity improves
significantly (independent of any adjustments made in the control panel).
The problem is that without the Intellimouse software there is no capacity
for accelerated scrolling, no horizontal scrolling and no ability to program
the additional buttons.

Yes, I have updated my video drivers, though its not clear to me how this
would be related to a USB issue. I've read about an implied connection
though I don't appreciate what the relationship is - but again thanks for the
suggestion.

It is not unusual for some drivers, especially video and hard drive
utilities, to dramatically effect other seemingly unrelated system
functions. In this case it sounds like you have a hardware issue
with the system itself. If it is under warranty I would exercise
same.
