Indexing - Does it lock files?

When a file is being indexed, does the access of the indexer prevent the
file from being deleted - or otherwise constrain basic file operations?

(For interest, if not, how does it work?)

(Justification - trying to work out why I am sometimes unable to delete MS
Word documents that are not in use... and Word also closed)

All thoughs appreciated

I get that because I am running an auto backup program.. it copies stuff
automatically to a network device.
If I try and delete something before it has done the backup it can say the
file is busy.
Do you run any similar program?

I use SyncToy (1.4 excellent product from MS - V2 in beta...) but entirely
manually so I am 99.9% certain it's not that...

Good thought though...
