repair in place of xp pro by oem disk. Now back to service pack 1 with
automatic updates on. au says it is installing installer 3.1 and i get the
green indicator. Reboot, same thing. History now shows 6 successful
downloads of 3.1 but I can't go on to the next update. So I am looking here
to fix the problem and come across a microsoft article saying to uninstall
and re-install. I type msiexec /unreg and get "ordinal 280 could not be
located in the dynamic link library msi.dll" What am I missing here?

Try a manual download of the WI package -
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2)

That worked perfectly.
Downloaded 52 updates.
Downloaded SP2 which started to install and then aborted with
"Control ID Not Found"
Can you fix that problem to.

Thanks,

Pleased that progress has been made with regard to your WU problem. As for the SP2 error -

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=878472
You receive the "Control ID not found" error message when you try to install Windows XP
Service Pack 2

Suggestion:

Why not download the full SP2 pack, that way you can save the file and slipstream it with
your original WinXP CD.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 - download (for single PCs also)
