Over the last couple of months my computer has periodically gone into an
infinite loop caused by (so it says) the file vga. I've updated my video
driver, but the problem continues. Any suggestions? I'm using XP, sp2

Post the complete error message, please.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

I can't really. The computer freezes up and begins rapidly flashing between
black and the above message in white writing on a blue screen...except
everything is blurry.

I'm running symantec anti-virus. I had Zone-Alarm running but recently
uninstalled it.

I doubt this has anything to do with Windows Update. Try posting in
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general for assistance instead.
