Infinite Virus scan becasue of nested directoroes

Hi,
I've had 2 virus scans (Dr. Web & Bit defender) go into infinite
scanning loops because of nested directories. I just killed one
because it scanned over a million files. Even though there are less
than 200,000 on my system. What is the logic of this? Can I get rid
of the nested directories? (Application Data/Application
Data/Application Data/Application Data/Application Data/Application
Data/Application Data/Application Data/Application Data/Application
Data/Application Data/) well, you get the picture.

I have the nested directories but not the scan problem(ESET NOD32). Each
iteration seems to be a copy of the previous but difficult to tell if
data is repeated on disc or just indexed repeatedly. I suspect indexing.
Has anyone any more clues?
