Hi.

I just installed an Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive. With it came EMC
Retrospect Express backup software. I used the Retrospect and sometime late
in the process, it failed to complete. There was an error message that
mentioned that process failed and data may have been lost. It did mention
something about an info.exe file.

Since then, in My Computer, when I try to open the C: drive, I get an error
message saying "Windows cannot find Info.exe. Make sure you have typed the
name correctly ..." Bottom line is I cannot open the C: drive through My
Computer.

Does anyone know what may be going on here? What is that file and can it be
restored if that's necessary?

Thanks.

This is not a legitimate Windows program. I shall suggest you to scan your
system with anti-malware tool. Try to run in Safe mode.

Have you tried to contact Iomega or Retrospect?

If you can boot to safe mode, can you run MSconfig and uncheck info.exe in
the startup tab?

Hi.

I did this -- using Spybot Search & Destroy in safe mode -- and the same
"info.exe cannot be found" message pops up.

I have discovered that I am able to open the C: drive from My Computer by
right-clicking on the drive icon and choosing Open.

Still, I am concerned that there seems to be something awry.

Thank you.

Hi.

I have not contacted Iomega as yet. The Web support system seems a bit
limited.

At any rate, I did run MSCONFIG in safe mode and could find no reference to
info.exe. If the error message is to be believed, it's the opposite situation
-- that info.exe cannot be found.

At any rate, I did discover (as noted in my reply to another suggestion
here) that I am able to open the C: drive in My Computer by right-clicking on
the icon and choosing Open.

Thanks.

Info.exe is a virus or spyware.

Maybe this will help.
http://www.spywareremove.com/removeinfoexe.html

Do a search for "info.exe" without quotes on Google.

The point is that *something* is causing that error message by trying to
start info.exe, so in msconfig you could've suppressed that attempt - if it
had been listed there.

Autoruns is more thorough - you could get it from Microsoft and use it to
find that attempt.

Although rereading what you said, I realize you might mean the problem
occurs not when booting, but on starting Windows Explorer. Maybe the
Explorer shortcut you were using has a command line argument trying to view
that file.

Or scan with AV or antimalware software, as CSM1 suggests.
