Information Bar not appearing and allowing Active X for Windows Up

I am running XP Home on a Pentium 4 2.8GB machine. I installed recent
updates on or around October 12, 2005 or just after. I cannot use windows
update anymore. When I go to Win Update website I hear a bunch of clicking
sounds and then a notice telling me I have to allow an ACTIVEX install comes
up. The information bar does not pop up giving me the option to allow the
Active X nor does holding CTRL down when I go to the website. I am
frustrated because I have set my security levels to allow active X in the
internet zone. What do I need to reinstall to get updates working again. PS
I dislike windows automatic updates. They are a pain and slow my work down.
I like manual updates but can't get them working... Help please.

See if this helps:

Download the file OLEfix.zip available here (it is a registry file
that origin from MS Support, and it has fixed the ActiveX problem
for several people):

http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip

Extract it and double click the contained OLEfix.reg file. Click Yes
on the dialog box that asks you if you are sure to add the information
in OLEfix.reg to the registry.

You may have to reboot your machine afterwards.
</Torgeir>

Bye,
Freudi

THANK YOU ever so much. The Ole Fix did the trick. I had several other
issues which are now fixed, including e-mail and system restore issues.
Thanks again.

Thank you, thank you, Mr. Freudenberger!!!! I too downloaded all updates
around the middle of October and then could not use windows update. I also
received the message about Active X controls, but could not see the
Information Bar. This fix of yours worked great. Thank you so much. After
spending 3 hours with a support person, paying by the hour, and having them
tell me they had no further idea on how to fix this problem, I cannot believe
you did. Thanks so much.

Thanks from me too, Mr Freudenberger! I have spent days and days looking for
the answer to the exact same problem. Your fix worked immediately. I'm so
grateful.

Hi Mr. Freudenberger,

You won't believe it, but my boss called me to find out what was wrong with
his computer. Of course, he had just done his Windows Update to XP. I knew
the answer thanks to you. Thanks again. Do you think we should tell
Microsoft? I went on their chat area and their "professional" does not
mention it at all.

Thanks for posting Mary - while I prefer just "Freudi" (nothing to
matter about) ;o)

> This fix of yours worked great. Thank you so much.

You're welcome! To make it clear once again, it's _not_ "my" fix,
it's a fix a user ("whatswrongnow") received by an MS Support
member. She did post the fix (almost) in here thankworthyly.
The only thing I did, was testing the fix (if it may harm under
some circumstances, which it does not) and putting it up on my
web site for downloading. That's all.

FWIW,
Freudi

I ran that .reg file and it didn't fix my issue. I also re-registered the
..dll files posted in an earlier thread and that didn't work. I am getting
the information bar pop-up but when I click the information bar, I have no
option to perform. I am thinking somehting got chaged in the Local Security
Policy or somewhere in the Administrative tools area.

Please help,

Eric S.
