I have the same problem. This happens regardless if I use Automatic Updates
or manually go to Windows Updates homepage.
This actually started before SP2 was installed but when WU started to
download it (atleast I think it was trying to download SP2). The WU icon in
the status bar showed "Downloading updates 0% progress" for a long time. To
solve this I first went to WU homepage and downloaded SP2 using WU. The
download now worked (I think), but when the installation phase started
Iencountered the "Initializing installation."-problem for the first time.
I then manually downloaded SP2 and installed it without problem. But now I
get the "Initializing installation"-freeze for all WU updates...
I tried to renamed SoftwareDistributions directory to force a rebuild of the
datastore, but no luck..
I have a Dell Dimension 8400, 3,2GHz with 1GB RAM.
Another malfunction I have noticed after installing XP SP2 is that opening
Properties for My Computer (or going via Control Panel and double clicking
System) takes anything from a few seconds to 10-15mins..?!?
Any help here is greatly appreciated!
