initializing installation hangs

I have been looking at a few postings on this issue that seemed to
have tie into anti-virus and I have made sure I am at the latest
updates from Symantec. I have also tried running through the steps in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931852 (although I had no WuTemp
folder) and it appeared to reinstall the Automatic Update, but then
the automatic update hangs when it gets to the message of
"Initializing installation...". My Windows Update log file has a
large number of entries for today, but there seem to be a few messages
that are interesting but I do not see a pattern that might be trying
to tell me what the nature if the issue actually is.

Has anyone seen anything recently that might resemble this issue?

Thank you. The issue turned out to be that the IIS service
inetinfo.exe was frozen while starting up due to a change in our
policy settings for symantec firewall. This led to the side strange
issue that folder properties could not be viewed, only file properties
could be reached. Likely, as a service, the firewall placed a
question to the NULL desktop before I logged into the system asking if
it was ok to allow that service to proceed.

So for me, the fix was to specifically tell the firewall to allow all
activity for that service.
