inserting corrections in Word

Not always but usually when I insert the cursor in the body of a Word
document to correct by backspacing, the backspace "eats up" the letters to
the ritht rather than opening a space. Each click of the backspace eats
another letter to the right.

The 'insert' key on your keyboard toggles that behavior on and off.
