Inserting a video in a Power point presentation

I have follwed all the instructions to install a video in a presentation,
however when attempting to preview hte video i cna hear sound but the window
is black. I have ensured that the movie is to the "front" of the slide
however there are no other objects on the slide.
The video can be viewed without problems on its own. It is and .avi file.
Can you offer any alterantives, what else could I try ?
