instal failed

updates download but fails to install only seems to apply to office 2003
updates other updates all install ok when checking on microsoft update site
the red X things gives Error Code: 0x518 ? any idea whats wrong?

Update for PowerPoint 2003 (KB933669)
Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB933666)
Security Update for Word 2003 (KB934181)
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB934180)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB934708)

all have the same error code ....Error Code: 0x518

Are you sure you have the right code? <eg>

The password is too complex to be converted to a LAN Manager password.

In any case search the log files (or any other diagnostic files created
by the install) for the context of the problem code. Search with the decimal
equivalent of the code too.

Since all of your problem updates are with Office products
and assuming the problem symptom is occurring
during the install phase, you may get more knowledgeable
assistance from a newsgroup which specializes in Office products.

Please try the following:

In any Office application, pull down the Help menu and select "Detect and
Repair", then follow instructions.

Then try the updates again, and report back whether that solved the problem.

thanks for all the above replies ....however from another source (teenageson)
i have learned that trend micro pc-cillen 2007 was blocking the install
turning off the antivirus allowed the install to happen.2007 version was only
installed recently the 2006 version never interfered....

I may perhaps add something to this trend.
I got the same problem (rapeated failures to install KB933666 [Security
update for Excel 2003]). I eventually traced it to a bloc by ZoneAlarm
Security Suite (version 6.5; firewall + anti-virus + antispam). Shutting ZA
before installing solves the problem.
Any specific explanation ? This is is the first time I have such a problem
with ZASS.

Are you using ZoneAlarm ? If yes, see my post just above yours.

Found it!

There is a log file C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log that hints at the errors.

In addition, the Event Viewer "Application" view clearly states the exact
file/directory that had the problem. Look for Errors from source
MsiInstaller.

In my case it was a file/directory permissions problem. I added Everyone
FullControl to
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11
and all subdirectories & files, and all 4 failed Office updates installed
fine.
OF COURSE I THEN REMOVED Everyone PERMISSIONS !!!

Could you clarify your answer, please Robin? It is not the office
application that is giving the error - it is the update done from Microsoft.
I have the same problem. When I try to download Update for Business Contact
Manager for Office 2007. Do I do what you suggested IN the OFFICE
application, or IN the DOWNLOADING from the Microsoft website? Could you
clarify a bit, please?
