When I right click below the address line I don't get an optional "install
ActiveX" anywhere. I get a menu but nothing like that. And I also can't get
update any Windows updates or Microsoft Updates without getting the warning
about ActiveX needing to be intalled.

Check in add remove programs (with show updates checked) for the following
update;

KB896688

try this patch for that update.

Follow instructions

Download the file OLEfix.zip available here (it is a registry file
that origin from MS Support, and it has fixed the ActiveX problem
for several people, getting this problem after installing KB896688):

http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip

Extract it and double click the contained OLEfix.reg file. Click Yes
on the dialog box that asks you if you are sure to add the information
in OLEfix.reg to the registry.

You may have to reboot your machine afterwards.

I don't show that I have that update (KB896688) installed. And I can't go to
Windows Updater because I have the same ActiveX problem the original poster
had, and my inability to get the ActiveX to install keeps me from going to
the Update site to download the fix for the ActiveX problem. So is buying a
Mac my only option at this point?

If you want to install KB896688, but Windows Update doesn't work, you can
download the update from the Microsoft Download Center:

<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/results.aspx?freetext=896688&displaylang=en&stype= s_basic>

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...&stype=s_basic
