This is the third attempt at finding some help. Are there any Windows Update
MVP's who can provide some feedback. Gratefull for anything.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++

Yesteday I posted a problem regarding install failure when using windows
update to which I've not had any response.

Having managed to install all outstanding updates including those requireing
validation (though I thought critical/high priority weren't subject to
validation) I had a clean and fully updated system.

Today, I decided to check for further updates and there was one high
priority shown. This was a new a new definition update for Windows Defender.
This downloaded OK but failed to install wit the following message

"Failed Updates
For help installing an update successfully, see the solution under each
problem description.

Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being
downloaded or installed
Solution: To fix the problem, try installing the updates again. If that
doesn't work, use the Troubleshooter to try solve the problem.

Microsoft Windows Defender
Definition Update 1.14.1676.8 for BETA Windows Defender (KB915597) "

I don't see any error number anywhere so using Trouble Shooter I put problem
text in and received 8 results each with associated error code ???????

When I copied to reported text what I got, was not just that shown above
but what is shown below

"Failed Updates
For help installing an update successfully, see the solution under each
problem description.

Problem: End User License Agreement (EULA) Not Accepted
Solution: Check for updates again and wait while you install updates. You
will be asked to accept the EULA before any updates with a EULA can be
installed.

Problem: Not Enough Disk Space
Solution: To make more space available, run the Disk Cleanup tool or
uninstall any programs that you don’t use. For directions, see Help and
Support on your computer.

Problem: Automatic Updates is currently installing updates
Solution: Please wait until Automatic Updates is complete and then check
your update history. At that time, if the update has failed to install, you
can try installing it from the website.
Note: To view Automatic Updates progress, click the updating icon in your
System Tray.

Problem: Please check your update history for a description.

Obviously many problem areas are possible mine seems to be with my PC but ???

I can go to Control Panel/Add Remove Programs, search for Windows Defender,
select "Change", follow the wizard to repair, obtain any software and
definition updates and have them successully installed. A re-run od Windows
Update then show non outstanding

Anyone help on this. I don't undertsand what's happening or hoe to resolve.

Uninstall Defenseless and use programs like Avast/AVG for your anti
virus, Ad-Aware, Spybot, Spywareblaster, CWShredder, Crap Cleaner,
Spywareguard for malware and Zone Alarm for your firewall, all FREE.

Defenseless is a BETA program which means that not only it isn't ready
for mass release, it cannot therefore give you any credible or reliable
protection. As you've noticed, and so have many others, even the updates
don't function properly.

If you're not a BETA tester, don't install BETA programs like IE7 and
Defender.

Alias,
Many thanks for your reply. I may well take your advice. I'm not a beta
tester and genenerally do not download beta software e.g. IE7 is no go
currently. I downloaded Defender (and it's previous incarnation) purely
ouit of interest - I run all the others you quote - and to be honest never
had a problem with it until now. Just wondered why it perceives my PC to be
at fault when installing updates via windows update site but works OK when
update through contol panel/add remove.

Simple, it's in BETA is why.
