I have been having a major frustration trying to install Vista Ultimate.
After almost an hour the install fails with the message "windows cannot
update the boot configuration", and the install is cancelled.

After wasting many hours I tried installing to a brand new hard drive; this
worked just fine.

What I want to do however is dual boot so I need XP and Vista in the same
drive.

I found a "fix" to a registry key on the microsoft website,
"Upperfilters=PartMr", but my registry already had this setting.

I was impressed by what I saw of Vista, but this is by far the most trblesom
install procedure I have xperienced in 20 years of working in IT.

I have tried installing to a clean partition, I have tried upgrading my
existing XP. I tried copying my XP partition to another clean hard drive and
upgrading that partition.

I have wasted lots of hours.

Any help much appreciated.

You need slow down Andy C. You are trying to do too much at one time. What
is most critical right now for you, dual booting Windows XP and Vista or
getting Vista installed on the machine?
