"install now" button is inactive

I am running Windows ME on a four year-old Pentium. Recently I had to
uninstall all of my security software, fix my configuration settings, and
re-install the security programs: McAfee Anti-Virus and Firewall, Spybot, and
Ad Aware. I no longer have a Windows Update on the task bar. I start Update
from the control panel and search and select "7 critical security updates"
but when I click the "install now" button nothing happens. I have exhausted
my knowledge of the situation and need someone to help fix the problem.
