How to Install Update Again

Hi,

I have an update that failed.

The Microsoft Update "message" says "try to install the update again".

The failed update does not appear on the install list when I fire up another
session of custom update.

I'm guessing that somewhere in the MS Update UI there is a way to re-run an
already listed update.

How do I do that?

(NOTE: I've looked at the installation logs. Only one of several
components (SQL Server) updated has actually failed. Others OK. )

Windows version? Does Automatic Updates or Microsoft Update website offer
you any (critical) updates right now?

Which one? How do you know it failed?

Why?

So, download the update (whatever it is) and install it manually.

You could use Add/Remove Programs. Find the update there.
Remove it and then it will be offered to you again.

Note: if you install an update manually you will not see that install attempt
in the WU log. Use the actual update install log to get details about the
success or failure of an update.

BTW once you are installing an update manually you are independent
of the update delivery mechanism, so you may find more knowledgeable
help with the update itself in a newsgroup which specializes in the product
being updated. Since you mentioned SQL server I am cross-posting
to one of its newsgroups for convenience. Be aware also though that
those newsgroups are also hosted via the MSDN forums, so you may prefer
to access them that way instead.

Good luck

Hi,

The question was:

Is there something in the Update UI that allows me to update again?

(Even if that upload is not currently listed.)

Although it's not said here I take it that there isn't such a thing.

I get messages like:

Error Code: 0x735E
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following
resources.
and
Error Code: 0x2B22
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following
resources.

The message, on the surface, is very clear. Use the "update again"
facility. Trouble was I couldn't find it. Seems there's a reason for that,
it isn't there. (Win 2003 in this case.)

As for the incipient suggestion that I mess around with remove and
re-install. Ain't going to happen this week. I'm on a slow mobile (3G)
broadband connection right now, it also has a quota, if I go over, the price
per Meg is crazy. I wanted to use the cached copy of the install not wait
another couple of hours for it to upload again. So I guess update still has
issues, dumbed down a bit too much maybe. Messages are a bit lazy for these
SQL Server updates (921896 and 934458). Looking at the logs I can see that
more information is in fact available to give a more targeted message to
users.

That's why I cross-posted and why I asked what update.
Those are messages from the update itself not from WU.

What were the "following resources" that were listed? <eg>

So, it might be useful to see those here too... ; )

BTW if there is any point of just running the update again
(without some manual intervention which I suspect may be necessary)
you could try looking for it under the SoftwareDistribution directory.
Or it may have expanded itself somewhere else and then would be
better rerun from there. The install log usually gives you a clue about where
an update is running from.

Good luck
