Install Updates Automatically fails to identify updates-Vista

When I have the Install Updates Automatically option selected in Vista, it
fails to identify any available update.
However, if I select Never Check for updates and uncheck the other options
and then manually check for update, updates do come up and can be installed?

Why is automatic updates not working for me?

Vista Home Premium.
HP Notebook, AMD Dual Core, 2 GB RAM.
