Install v.5 ?

Hi,

When I go to Windows Update I'm asked to install v.5. I've been told that
if I install v.5 that SP2 will automatically start to download to my
computer. Is this correct?

Or can I install v.5windowsupdate and it will "act" the same as v.4, scan my
computer and show what is available? There were some "Windows" updates I
haven't installed yet. (I understand SP2 will give me the critical updates I
didn't install yet). My computer is not ready to install SP2 yet. I have some
software acting up and want to get that straightened out first.

Thanks,
Judy

No, you have to initiate it and then choose what you want to download if you
use the Custom Install. If you use the recommended (?!) Express Install,
yes. Here it is from the v.5 site:

Express Install (Recommended): High Priority Updates for Your
Computer

Choose this for the fastest updating. Quickly scan for, download, and
install only the critical and security updates your computer needs.

Custom Install: High Priority and Optional Updates for Your Computer

Choose this to scan for optional, critical, and security updates your
computer needs, choose from all the updates on the site, and review updates
before downloading.

Notice that the Express Install does not say "and review updates before
downloading".

Yes. Use Custom Install. I did it and it showed SP 2 and I elected to just
look at it for a few seconds and then I went to another web site.

I don't blame you. My computer's working fine and I'm waiting at least a
month before I take the plunge with SP2 and I will use the CD, not download
it.

Hi Alias,
Thank you so much! What a relief. I may just look at it for a few
seconds too....LOL. I have ordered the CD but haven't quite decided which
way I'll go. My tech told me to wait for the CD. Doesn't the windows update
search for what you need out of SP2 first and just download what you need?
Can the CD do that? LOL, seriously. What's the difference?
Appreciate your assistance.

That's NOT true. You also have to initiate it from Express Install. Is does not download automatically.

Oh, I see the difference now. But it doesn't say that on the Express Install
like it does on the Custom Install. That's why I thought that. I haven't
clicked on the Express Install because I didn't want to start the
downloading process of SP2.

I don't want to take a chance of missing one single bit with a download and
am hoping the CD hasn't left any out and I have a one megabyte cable
connection. I could download 80 megs in no time at all. The CD will only
install what you need.

Hi guys,
Ok. I think I've deciphered this. Simply, I can download and install
v.5 safely without it doing anything more on its own. Then I have *My*
choice of Express & Custom. Custom is like v.4, I can review it & choose it
or not. Which is what I would want, like v.4. (hide it, and whatever the
changes are now.)

In Express, it scans my computer then stops and shows me the available
updates. I can still pick which update I want after the scan, right?, but
just not be able to *review* the update, like you could with v.4.

Thank you, I think I've got it. Right?

Judy,
V5 has a scanner, when you first get it you have to make some choices which
I won't worry you with. I would recommend you accept v5. In your case, I
would recommend you get the entire SP2 file which is available by separate
download here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
.. A post on one of these Newsgroups today, however, states that Staples has
copies of of free SP2 CDs which you can pick up which I recommend IF his
post is true since this a large file to download [266MB]. This is a super
set containing an update scanner, the SP2 new stuff, plus every change since
original XP release including SP1.
