I am in a desktop support role for a small company that currently has roughly
20 computers with most of the machines being Windows Vista. This company is
expected to grow to 60 - 80 computers by the end of the year. Currently the
Vista machines do not receive automatic updates because admin access is
required to install them. I do not have time to manually update each machine.
Any thoughts on the best solution? We need to keep the users locked down or
they will cause issues. Also, we are using active directory on Windows Server
2003. Can auto updates be specified through domain policy? Can updates pushed
through WSUS be installed without admin rights?

Thanks,
Tim

Group Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates ->
Windows Components -> Windows Update

Are you talking about the local policy of every machine or the domain policy?
I am assuming domain policy. If I make this change will the end user
computers update without admin rights?

I'm talking about gpedit on my xp pro workgroup computer. I have no
experience with domain policy.
To your second question:
Under the branch Windows Update you will find a corresponding option.
It's the 4th from below (I'm not sure about the english translation, my
Windows speaks German): "Allow non-administrators to receive update ...."

Tim,

IF the company does grow to the size you stated then it may be more
efficient to employ WSUS. However, the next release of the Windows
Update Agent is supposed to allow non-admin Users to install updates in
Vista.

Don't recall if this also applies to XP.
