install xp-sp2 from disk: preliminary steps?

using xp home, sp1. dell desktop 4600, 5 mos old.
i have received sp2 disk from microsoft. (thank you microsoft!). i have been
reviewing KB articles & some outside sources as to the steps to complete
prior to the install. is it nesessary to disconnect from internet prior to
running the install? i use high-speed cable modem, connected thru a router
to computer's ethernet card. if so, should i just unplug at computer?

Procedure I used was to turn off cable modem, firewall, McAfee, Spy Sweeper,
and all peripherals. This was done so install would not be 'confused' by all
the 'extra' stuff.

After SP2 was finished installing I turned off the Microsoft firewall,
turned on everyting I had turned off and SP2 identified everything just fine
and has been running ok for weeks.
