install zone alarm on vista?

I've been trying to install ZA on Vista SP1.

The version I found is 71_078_000. When I tried to install it, it came
up with a "true vector internet monitor has been blocked due to a
known incompatibility with this version of windows".

Anyone know of a fix? Is there a later/updated version ?

Thanks

You are not going to find anything better than the Vista FW and Vista in
itself due to the advanced features the FW and Vista are using.

+Bob+,
First go to ZoneAlarm's website and get the latest version.

To get past any possible interference for MS software, then just before you install ZoneAlarm, disable Windows Firewall.

After installing ZoneAlarm, fetching the latest data file updates and running ZoneAlarm virus and spyware scans, then if you so desire, then leave ZoneAlarm on and turn Windows Firewall ON.

Now I know what the official MS partyline is and I've watched their videocasts BUT I have Vista Ultimate and the latest version of the ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite and the two play together nicely. Many AV programs, many firewall programs do not peacefully coexist with Vista BUT my experience with ZA has been %100 positive. The beauty of having ZA is that its firewall will detects efforts by your Vista software to contact the Internet. Some of these I have categorically denied and have a faster running system. My computer is a stand-alone laptop and I access the Internet from places like Starbucks and even Jack-in-Box and also have a Verizon wireless card. I'm well-pleased with the performance of the ZA firewall with and without the Vista Firewall.

Only recently, and still not on all versions of Vista, has MS made it possible to have not only an incoming but also an outgoing firewall. I find ZA's outgoing firewall much easier to use than that of MS. ZA, depending upon your program preferences, will notify you every time a piece of MS Vista software wants to contact the Internet or to monitor your keystrokes, menu-choices, etc.

When you get ready to install ZA be sure to temporarily turn off Windows Firewall, Windows Defender, any other anti-spyware products and off course any other anti-virus software.

AFter install, you can turn Windows Defender and Windows Firewall back on with no problems despite all of the dire warnings and notices in red from MS.

I also run SpyBot's Search and Destroy with no problems.

The "my father is Microsoft and he is always right" chaps will disagree with me BUT I have experience on my side.

Except that my software firewall is almost exclusively for outbound
use. Inbound is handled well by hardware. Vista FW is managed by MS
and allows them to do whatever they want. I prefer an independent
program at least making an attempt to govern their excesses as well as
others.

Thanks. After some hunting last night, I did find that. It's actually
a link to the downloader program that downloads the actual ZA program.

The secondary problem I had was that their downloader program has a
major bug in it. (Lots of reports on the ZA forums of the same bug).
Eventually I found a direct link to the XP version (no download
program in between), substituted the Vista program file name, and
pulled it directly from their server.

All's well with the latest version.

If you stay with Vista FW, get vista Firewall Control from
www.sphinx-soft.com. Makes VFW very easy to configure.

I had used ZA free for years and liked it. Since the last MS update, had to
drop it. When I bought this Vista machine it would not allow it to work,
kept blocking one of the drivers as incompatible. I tried again last night
same thing. I did find Webroot offers a free FW that is supposed to do the
same thing ZA did, block both in and out. Installed it and it went on fine,
seems to be running fine without any problems.

Interesting technical argument...

My point is not technical. Apparently as a typical technician, you
can't see the forest for the trees. As a non-typical technician, I'd
be happy to enlighten you. This is not about technical supremacy, it's
about user features.

My only reason to run a software FW is to catch outbound access by
unauthorized programs. I include in that classification programs from
MS that like to call home without permission. ZA provides the user
features I need, Vista FW does not.
