I paid $1100.00 for a new Dell Inspiron 1520, had Windows XP installed, and
was doing fine.

Suddenly, everytime I try to shut down, I'm given the option to
automatically have UPDATES installed, or NOT. I always choose to automatica
installation.

Every time, it comes back telling me that IT FAILED at installation.

I notice that its giving me a "previous" installation date of Oct,
2008!!!!!!!! We're not there yet!!!!!! I can't seem to get any further than
this.

COMCAST, DELL, and Microsoft have all said to give them some more $, and
they'll fix it. I don't need to tell you what I said to them.

At this point, I'm thinking of buying a gallon container of Vasaline, and
sending parts of this $&*@P% machine to the CEO of each corp.

More practically, can some good old fashioined compassionate
English-speaking individual give me some direction. I'd be most
appreciative.

bhd, try openng your control panel and clicking on automatic update and check
the setting your prefer or you can disable it all together and from then on
remember to check manually for updates on a regular basis and make sure you
check on the second tuesday of each month that is when MS pushes the latest
critical updates.
Good luck

Hello there, WilliamTell:

Thanks for your efforts. I disabled the whole "update" system, and was
immeidately told that I have 7 new updates, READY TO GO.

Like a fool, I forged ahead with great expectations . . . . guess what . . .
..
"FAILED" is the code word for microsoft.

I've been told to bite the bullet and pay Geek Squad some outrageous fee to
fix this. It just really gets me . . . . . kinda like GWB and his side-kick
Dickie boy . . .
you pays yo $, and they do what they damn please.

THANK YOU for your effort, and time . . . . . I'm wondering if the
Salvation Army might reconsider and take this off my hands if I pay them
$100.00 to take it.

LOL

Best to U

Hey, do you have antispyware installed and if you do have the latest defs
installed. Try a full scan. If you do not have anti spyware software
installed I personally use Webroot, but there are several freeware programs
available on the net.

Report the errors found in the installation log file. You will find them
listed as \windows\system32\kb<knowledge base number>.log. You could of
course just find the latest log file, and search for errors.
