Installation fails with 0x8009310b

Installation of BITS 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 fails with error code 0x8009310b and
nothing else by way of explaining - thanks a lot, MS. This happened after a
repair re-installation of SP1 over SP2 following a memory chip fail. After
several unsuccesful attempts to make this work I feel tempted to do a
complete re-formatting of my harddisk - unless anyone else has a better idea?

FYI you can get a much more compact version of that thread here:

I haven't seen any solutions yet for this issue so unless Sudheer
found one and communicated it privately I'm afraid a diagnosis
would still be called for. Those previous diagnostics were from
WUv4 (i.e., Windows Update.log). By now I would expect them to be
from WUv5 (i.e., WindowsUpdate.log) plus the log from the update
if it is getting that far into the install phase.)
