Installation Failure 0x80242006

FAQ and Discussions show no matches on this update error. It occurs when
trying to install the Genuine Advantage update. (Yes, this is a legit
installation.)

If your system is having difficulties with 905474, then please download and
install:

http://www.download.windowsupdate.co...d496154544.exe

Then re-boot Windows. Does this solve your problem?

For the record, I too have this exact same problem (will not install 905474);
I'm a bit nervous about installing Vincenzo's alternative after reading the
2nd post (about losing system).
Especially as I know my system has been previously validated with a previous
GVA tool. (I just ran it to confirmit was still OK).

I'm like Welshmun, and do not want to try this fix. I'm getting the same
error code (Error Code: 0x80242006) and have had a couple of issues with IE 7
ever since I "upgraded". I'm going to ignore this download for now. I've
tried adding the site to trusted sites, and disabling my firewall to see if
that helped....nada.

Well, that's a quandry. Other than failing to install this update, I don't
have any problems. One post indicates a chance at losing the system with the
manual update...I'm not willing to risk that.

I guess it comes down to this: Microsoft needs to convince me that
installing the update is to my advantage - and worth the risk.

At this point, I don't see why I should.
