I am getting this error during the download for a windows update. I have
tried most of the recommended "fixes", but none have worked. The output from
proxycfg is as follows:

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you receive the
0x8024402C, 0x80240030 or 0x8024502d error
This error usually happens because there is an invalid character in the proxy
override settings.

You may receive an error message when you search for available updates on the Windows
Update Web site

I do not have anything in the proxy override settings

The "solutions" outlined in this article did not fix the problem. I had
already tried these prior to posting this message, and as I indicated, I do
not have any proxy settings.

Do you have a proxy specified for IE? (Where is that 8080 coming from?
Is there a server somewhere listening on that port? In case you are trying
to use a proxy tracer it might be a good idea to try without such an unusual
path.)

BTW FWIW my experience with NT4 was that changing proxy settings
via the IE Tools menu was usually unsuccessful. Consequently even
with XP I always use the Internet Properties tool instead for those settings.
E.g. Run... control inetcpl.cpl and make proxy settings using its
Connections tab. Look under both the Local Area Network (LAN) settings
and any dial-up connections you may be using. Make sure that *all* checkboxes
in those dialogs are _unchecked_.

As I stated I have tried all of the solutions that I have found relating to
this error, or anything that looks remotely possible. It is very frustrating
as all indications are that this has something to do with proxy settings, yet
I do not have a proxy enabled. I never had a problem with this until I
loaded the latest version of WU

I do not have any proxy settings defined in IE. I did at one time, which
would normally be disabled however, I removed these after I first
encountereed the problem in the hope that this would be the solution. Alas,
it was not.

Still frustrated.

I think that narrows it down to the cache:8080 symptom then.
Another factor is that the account used by that PID 1880
won't be the same as the one you used to download the file manually.
At least it establishes that you don't have a DNS problem with that site.

Did you use the Internet Properties tool I showed you to check
your proxy settings? How about setting them to something other
than 8080 then unchecking those? Make sure all possible proxy ports
are something other than 8080. Make each one unique and leave them
set but unchecked and retry. Do you still see 8080 in the log?
If not you may have a better clue about where it was coming from.
