Installation Failure error code 0x01 on Direct X update

Does anyone know what causes this? My night started with an update to my
EndNotes that failed to install into Office, then an attempt to repair Office
that complained about something from .Net, repairing my Visual Studio and
trying to update the OS so that I can then repair Office and then get my new
version of End Notes installed! Everything is released software, I'm just
way too busy to spend time on the phone with support types asking me if I
clicked 'Next' or not!
