INSTALLATION FAILURE FOR SECURITY UPDATE FOR M.NET FRAMEWORK

I get the following error when running Windows Update and getting

I too am getting the same error when running Windows Update and getting
installation failure for Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework,
Version 2.0 (KB917283):
Installation Failure
Error Code: 0x643
I have tried all the supposed contact with microsoft but it seems to go
inever increasing circles.
Anybody know why?

If you searched this newsgroup for the phrase 917283, you would find many
threads with potential solutions.

Hi did as recomended:-Go into control panel-Add/remove programs-Click Net
Version 2.0-Click Change and a repair option appears-repair/restart and
download will install-Worked for me/same exact problem- JT in Albuquerque.

I tried this, did not work. So I tried it again, and still did not work. Any
other suggestions?

temporarily turn off your virus protection software. this allowed it to
properly install on my computer.

Download the "dotnetfx_cleanup_tool", Run it, and use the spin box to remove Microsoft .NET
Framework 2.0. Leave version 1 alone. After it uninstalls and reboots, go to Windows Update
and it will show that Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 needs to be installed. After that, the
update for it (KB917283) will install correctly. Another pain in the ass from Microsoft. You
would think the error message would TELL you that 2.0 is not working right...

BEWARE! The file recommended by "Unk" eliminated my installation of Windows
Live OneCare and froze my firewall to the "off" setting.

This person's solution worked for me without a problem. It takes a bit of
time (15 minutes for the first, less if you need to do it on several
machines)

Installation Failure Error Code: 0x643

Here's the fix fellas...you'll love it:
1: Turn automatic updates off.
2: Download .NET 2.0 (for 32-Bit) :
Link
(Note: If you use ATI VGA you must disable/exit the Catalyst Control
Center before updating the framework.)
3: Uninstall Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0
and reboot.
4: Install Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0
and reboot.
5: Then run MS Update and install KB917283
then reboot.
6: Turn automatic updates back on
