Installation failure of sp2

I am trying to update to xp service pack 2, the update has downloaded but
will not instal. This has been happening since I had to format my hard-drive
& do a fresh instal of xp home with service pack 1a. I have tried installing
the service pack 20+ times, each with the same result. Any help would be much
appreciated.

I'm not interested in really knowing this, but :
Is this a legal activated XP installation? If not, it won't work ever (MS
put some kind of block in it).

You are going to have to provide better information if anyone is to help
you. What exactly do you mean by "will not install"? What error messages
occur?

Please also check that you have carried out all necessary pre-requisite
updates to BIOS, chipset drivers, and so on, before attempting to apply SP2.

Ensure that you disable all anti-virus and anti-malware before running the
SP2 updater.

USe msconfig to disable all non-Microsoft start-ups, and restart Windows,
before running the SP2 updater.

FYI it is an authentic copy of Windows XP home edition which has been
activated by me, (as stated in original question)

Thanks for the info, although I managed to update by downloading the Windows
XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and
Developers

This installed sp2 without any problems, (still confused by this problem, as
I cannot instal the other updates from the microsoft update site, as I get
the same error. ie. the files download but do not instal, and the message
only says that there is a problem on my computer.)
