Installation of internet explorer 8 - Update

Installed. After restarting, desktop has some ugly picture I never use.
Went to settings, then display, then desktop background. Clicked on
different image, apply, OK. No change. Did this over and over, trying pics
directly from "My pictures", themes, etc. Nothing will change the picture on
my desktop.

Any ideas?
