Installation problem! Urgent.

Today I've reinstalled my Windows XP Pro (2003) on my computer and I used
Microsoft Update to download 43 files for updating the system. When
restarting Windows I got a blue screen telling me that Windows wasn't able to
start and that I have to go through diagnostics or try to restore the system.
I restored the system, but now I'm wondering - what Updates are insecure to
download? Shall I be afraid of using Microsoft Update? I can't even install
SP2 I'm afraid..

Someone help me, or give me good advice. Please?

Windows XP Professional or Windows Server 2003?

Update all of your hardware drivers and check for a new BIOS beforre you
upgrade this next time..
Start with SP2 after you have done all that.. Reboot.
Choose a few critical patches.. Reboot.
Narrow it down to one patch if you can. Then we can help.
