Ok, Baz, did you receive a reply to your question? I have the same problem.
(Microsoft and the phone companies seem to feel everyone lives for their
complexities with infinite time to research-not that we are the ones that
keep them alive.)

The file can be downloaded from the following site;

or

(same site, just a shorter link)

You probably have the enterprise version of Office XP and not the retail
version; hence the 'ret' suffix. There are three versions of Office XP,
retail, enterprise, and trial. The enterprise version is purchased with
mulit-user licenses and typically installed by a network adminstrator.
Office 2000 has updates for each version, to date, I have not found an
administrator update for the enterprise version of Office XP, but I haven't
looked real hard. I'll let you know if I find one.

to make the short story I have seen 3 suggestions:
1. go back to the MS website and download the full service pack and read the
notice that goes with it. It says in there that in some cases, it still is
aking for the disk, because ... type of installation.... blah blah, fuzzy
statements....bottomline: we do not know and we do not care.
if you are like me, 10,000 miles away from the office with the version
installed from the license, it was not a good idea to install any update from
a company that does not know what they are doing.
2. one of the MS tech suggests very helpfully to buy the new 2007 version,
..... no comment
3. the best thing I have seen: Excel is looking for the folder XLStart in
the folder Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10. I did that and miracle
Excel opens and I scaped the pack 3
