While searching on the error code 0x80070017 and the "Cyclical Redundancy
Check" or CRC, I found an answer by "Jupiter Jones [MVP]", mentioning "You
seem to have a CRC error (Cyclic Redundancy Check), normally caused by a bad
CD, bad download etc."
This advice made me look up the Check Disk possibility, I ran a test of the
disk by selecting "My Computer", then the hard drive, right clicking on this
icon, selecting "properties" and then "tools", and the first option about
checking for errors on this volume, check immediately. (I run XP in another
language so I can't mention the exact names in English for these choices).
Upon restarting the computer, it checked the disk (chkdsk), verifying files,
indices etc. Upon verifying file data, which appears to have been done in
DOS mode or similar, a message on screen stated (in my language of choice)
that "Windows replaced damaged clusters in the file 26444 with the name
\Windows\Softwa~1\download\4B...\lang\pintlgs.imd. Verifying files finished!"
Upon returning to the Windows Update web page, the web site automatically
checked the status of my computer and that the software was already loaded
(thus no option to reload the software, reloading the software had been my
first attempt, but not possible to pursue). When I chose install, after
Windows having repaired the damaged cluster of the said file, the software
SP2 installed without other problems than it all being a rather time
consuming process.
Thanks to "Jupiter Jones [MVP]" casual comment on another issue, my problem
was solved.
