Installation of SP3 stalls

I'm running XP Professional SP2 and I'm trying to upgrade to SP3. However,
the installation process stalls at some point after unpacking files. First,
the process went dead with a "creating cabinets" notification in the wizard
window, and now, after I downloaded a 316MB file called
WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe it goes dead with a "checking for disk
space" message. The installation process just stops, everything else works
fine. What's wrong and how do I complete the upgrade?

How much free space is no your hard drive
and have you defragmented it lately?
