I just installed the new two critical updates for my xp-pro machine (I am on
my wifes computer now - I am humiliated), an now I can't go anywhere on the
internet. All connections and software is normal... I re-ran all the
internet and networking wizards. I can no longer ping my router (same one
as my wife is on). All indications on the router is that the computer is
connected properly (seems to be talking to my nic card). I have a history
since installing SP2 and had hoped these updates would help and they are
worse... After SP2 install, there were about 8 internet sites that my
machine would no longer go to... These were important sites to me..
american express, scottrade etc. I got on the newsgroups here and tried
everything they suggested... no avail. at least i could get to the internet
then.. what would happen is i would type in the url and it would go out and
say (lower left) connecting to www.scottrade.com..... then it would just
site there as if it is waiting for a reply and time out... Other sites
worked just fine. I installed the two new critical updates and now it just
says... looking up www.google.com... it does that with all sites... so I
tried pinging the sites with zero returns.. I then tried pinging my
router.. same results.. Any suggestions would be appreciated as at this
point I will have to reinstall xp-pro and I have a lot of stuff on my
computer that I would rather not have to reinstall......

need major help here...
PS, I am certified A+, Network+, win2000, xppro, Network admin.... still
stumped...

I too recently installed the following updates
Successful January 12, 2005 Security Update for Windows Server 2003
(KB871250) Automatic update
Successful January 12, 2005 Security Update for Windows Server 2003
(KB891711) Automatic update
Successful January 12, 2005 Security Update for Windows Server 2003
(KB890175) Automatic update

On windows 2003 server and was unable to access the internet the following
day cause i choose not to reboot, and when i did goodbye internet. I
remembered Windows update ran the night before so i scanned my system for
recent files it came up with the Updates that where installed.

I removed KB890175 and rebooted the server, after it rebooted i was back on
the internet.Surprised me too.

I have confirmed this to a problem on Windows XP Pro as well because i had a
customer call me regarding internet access and i asked him if he recently
installed any Automatic updates. He said yes. Took the same steps as on XP
2003 server and he was back up and running.

FYI I am certified A+ as well ,and Network+
hope that helps

Can anyone from MS or else where confirm this to be a reoccuring problem ?

I reinstalled the service pack that i thought was causeing the problem from
the windows update site but choose the read more option and downloaded the
version for my O.S not the one windows update would automatically give and
rebooted had no problems this time getting on the internet.

I don't think Sp2 has anything to do with the error.

i'm having the same problem. installed the 4 updates mentioned above,
all at the same time, using windows update site. i did not choose any
specific files, just used "install now".

when i open ie, just sits like it's trying to connect. weird thing is
my aol instant messenger and yahoo messenger programs ARE connected.
definitely something within IE.

will try to remove the updates, one at a time, but focused on kb891711
and see if that helps.

i removed kb890175 using add/remove programs. everything was fine
after.

then i went back to windows update and instead of just accepting what
file it wanted to sent me, clicked "details", went to the knowledge
base article and selected the specific download for windows xp. after
installation, everything was fine again.

i had installed all 4 updates (kb891711, kb871250, kb890175, and
kb890830). after i removed kb890175, everything was fine so it's
pretty clear that my problems were associated with that one update.
hope that helps.

chris
