I've played around with the security settings but can't get it to stop making
me click to activate. Any clues?

I had the same problem. Still have the enter bar on activeX controls
after installing.

Windows Version: XP SP2

IE: 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519

Also, an application we've written uses activeX's and kills the browser
on 2nd invocation of a custom activeX control. Gone, poof, bye-bye.

Thanks for any insight.

I have also run into this problem, but I had to go through an extra step to
make IE work the way I want.

When I first tried to apply 917425, it would bomb and say that my IE version
wasn't matching up to the info 917425 tried to apply to.
I found (for me at least) that I had to remove 916281 and then apply 917425,
then 917425 worked fine.
I also found that if you apply 917425 and then try to put back 916281, the
behavior pops up again.
You have to leave 916281 off to eliminate the popup "Click to activate and
use this control."
As of this posting, I'm not sure if MS has published any hotfix to get rid
of this behavior for good.

They won't be. The change to ActiveX is now permanent. This stems from the
court decision in the Eolas vs Microsoft case.

917425 will no longer install on any up-to-date Internet Explorer. If you
remove 916281 (or any other numbered Cumulative Update for IE), then you
leave yourself vulnerable to all malicious exploits delivered via
specially-crafted web pages, just as if you had never patched IE6 SP1 since
it first came out.

I should have put in there that I didn't endorse leaving IE unpatched.
Also, I found another KB article (917783) that possibly deals with this issue.
If 916281 is applied on a computer, will 917783 get rid of the text popup
behavior?
If so, is this patch available anywhere for download, since there is no
download link on the article's page?

Thanks,

I'm not clear what "popup behaviour" you are referring to, as the earlier
part of this thread has expired in the newsgroup.

It is only available from MS Support. It installs a version of MSHTML.DLL
which is now older than the one in normal service.
