Installed KB936181...or not?

Using windows update I installed KB936181 (Vista x64). History shows
successful update but WU continually tells me the same update needs to be
installed. I've reinstalled multiple times, same result. How can I tell if
the update was installed or not? If it is, how can I stop WU from thinking
it's not?

It's not installed properly if it's being reoffered. See:

Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2
(KB936181) may repeatedly appear in the update list on Microsoft Update
or on Windows Update
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941729

Is HP software installed ? That's been identified as locking msxml4.dll
and preventing it from being replaced. If yes, then disable all HP items
from loading on boot by using MSConfig:

1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation,
type the password, or click Continue.
2. Click the Startup tab. Locate all HP entries. Make a note of each one
first, then UNcheck the boxes next to them.
Click Apply, Close, and then restart the system when prompted to.
3. After installing KB936181 and rebooting, open MSConfig once more and
REcheck the boxes next to the HP items that you had previously UNchecked.
Click Apply, Close, and restart the system once more.

I also have this problem I tried checking for any HP software and I also
tried the directions in that link. When I enter everything into the comand
prompt it just tells me access is denied, and when I try to download the
update through the link, it tells me the log file is not correct or to check
it and make sure it's writeable.

Any suggestions?

Hello. I have tried all the suggestions, etc., listed - no luck. I keep
getting " Cannot create HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft|Windows|Curr ent
Version\Installer\InProgress". I have at least 40 "installed" in my update
history!
Is there any way I can find out the names of all files within 936181?
perhaps just one does not load for some reason. My next step will be a call
to Microsoft.
Thanks for your time. Bob (ommrr)--

Good health and good luck. Bob

Try from Safe Mode.

Harry.

Boot to Safe Mode and rename msxml4.dll from a Command Prompt.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941729

If the update still will not install, than *strongly suggest* that you
contact MS for *no-charge* support:
