Installed Zune, now WMP causes blue screen

Had my computer for a two week stint while i had a fight with comcast
during which everything thing worked well. The day i get internet
finally, i dutifully went and downloaded driver updates for all my
components, installed AVG and AdAware, then finally installed my Zune
software.

Tried playing my MP3's in the Zune player and ended up getting strange
distortions in the songs that worked fine previously. At random points
in every song the computer will "stutter" and slow down. Thinking it
may be a problem with the zune i pulled up my media player again and
the problem was worse! Now not only does all media (video as well)
stutter, but if WMP is left on for any length of time i get a blue
screen of death and a reboot.

Im also fairly certain that the Zune software killed my laptop prior to
this, anyone have any suggestions to fix these problems (barring
reformat if possible...)

Hi 769--

Do you get a specific error message with the BSOD or any WMP errors on the
desktop or at Event Viewer? Reason I ask is that WMP fixes are often
specific to WMP errors. If you do see if you can match them at:

References that you can use to match errors you find in Event Viewer:

Windows Media Player Help Articles List
http://msmvps.com/chrisl/articles/17315.aspx

Windows Media Player: WMP mini FAQ (Zach Robinson Lead Developer WMP Core
Team MSFT
http://www.zachd.com/pss/pss.html

If you cannot find the error in Event Viewer to match with these resources
then use one of these to fix it:

***SFC as a Remedy***:

SFC or System File Checker is a bit like the spare tire in your car or a
backup battery I suppose. In Vista of course, they have changed it somewhat
and come up with a new name--Redmond stands for name it something different
twice a year and now it's part of WRP or Windows Resource Protection. It
scans protected resources including thousands of files, libraries, critical
folders, and essential registry keys, and it replaces those that are
corrupted with intact ones. It fixes a lot of problems in Windows XP, OE,
Windows Vista, Win Mail, IE6, and on Vista or if it is installed on XP, IE7.
It protects these things from changes by any source including
administrators, by keeping a spare of most of them.

How to Run SFC:

Type "cmd" into the Search box above the Start Button>and when cmd comes up
at the top of the Start menu>right click cmd and click "run as Admin" and
when the cmd prompt comes up at the cmd prompt type "sfc /scannow" no quotes
and let it run. This may fix things quite a bit. It replaces corrupt files
with intact ones, if you're not familiar with it.

***Startup Repair from the Vista DVD***

How to Use The Vista DVD to Repair Vista (Startup Repair is misnamed by the
Win RE team and it can be used to fix many Vista components even when you
***can boot to Vista):

http://www.windowsvista.windowsreins...rtup/index.htm

If you elect to run Startup repair from the Vista DVD (it can fix major
components in Vista--I've verified this many many times; it's good for more
than startup problems, and the Win RE team simply screwed up when they named
it not understanding its full functionality):

Startup Repair will look like this when you put in the Vista DVD:

http://www.vistaclues.com/wp-content...r-computer.png

You run the startup repair tool this way (and system restore from here is
also sometimes effective):

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925810/en-us

How To Run Startup Repair In Vista Ultimate (Multiple Screenshots)
http://www.windowsvista.windowsreins...rtup/index.htm

It will automatically take you to this on your screen:

http://www.vistaclues.com/wp-content...r-computer.png

That will allow you to go to the Vista setup that has a Repair link on
thelower left corner>click it and then you'll see a gray backgrounded list
and I want you to click Startup Repair from it and follow the directions.

The gray screen after you click the first link in the above pic will look
like this:

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winv...ir/Image17.gif

Click Startup Repair, the link at the top and after it scans>click OK and
let it try to repair Vista. It will tell you if it does, and if it
doesn't, try System Restore from the Recovery Link on the DVD. If these
don't work booting into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key and using System
Restore from one of the safe modes besides VGA may work. That means you
have the option to try 4 different safe modes to get to system restore, (one
from the Recovery link on the DVD) and sometimes one will work when the
others won't.

You could also try a Repair Install with Vista which is done exactly the
same way as in XP:

Good luck,

By chance, I just got my Zune player 2 days ago. I immediately went to the
web site and downloaded the latest software. I didn't use the included CD
which had older software on it. The install went well. Further software
updates and a firmware update came in via the internet.

All is working great. So I can at least say that the latest software works
with Vista, provided you don't put the original software on your computer.
Then all bets are off as to what may happen.

Thanks for the excellent advise Chad, i really appreciate the time you
spent getting that together. Unfortunately I've received 4 different
errors stemming from windows media player, and so far no luck finding
the under lying cause.

SFC came up with no results, and for some reason i don't get the option
to repair Vista. I get a "Check compatibility" and "install now" option,
but thats it. I have made some progress with reducing the occurrence of
distortion, and so far no more blue screens. Heres what i did.

System restore (didn't actually work, but thought id list it anyway)
Ran a registry cleaner (CCleaner)
Rolled back my audio drivers, then ultimately uninstalled them
completely and reinstalled off factory disk.
Finally downloaded a Divx Codex pack.

I'm more and more convinced that the problem lies with the decoding of
the files, but i cant find anyway to uninstall and then reinstall
Windows Media Player in Vista (Home Premium 32bit if that helps)

Getting to the point that im going to back up my data and try again,
unless anyone can think of something Im not doing?

Richard Urban makes a very good point about software for hdw that you buy
that can save you a lot of time and headaches.. Many many times,
particularly when a new OS is less than a year or months old, the software
on the CD or DVD will have been updated on the website for the hdw and it's
always good practice to try to go to the website and use the latest software
posted there.

Give the Zune website software a try. I should have thought of that.

Turns out it was not my audio that was corrupted, it was actually my
network. There are a number of posts on the problem here

http://blogs.technet.com/markrussino...7/1833290.aspx

My entire issue was actually fixed by letting windows search for a new
driver to my network card (apparently the Linksys vista driver i had
downloaded was either old or corrupted). This old driver caused the
network card to run at about a tenth its normal speed, messing with my
audio during the process. If anyone has noticed a slow down of their
network while playing audio/video, check the link above for some user
fixes. Or wait for microsoft...
