installer 3.1 problem

every time i go to windows update i get told that Windows Installer 3.1 is
ready to update. Yet when i click on OK, it says it is updated and i press
close and i go to the update page with a list of updates needed.I can then
update my PC as needed. However next time i go to check update the installer
3.1 is there again. This is with XP Home on a SATA hard drive.
Any ideas please.

same problem that has been discussed here for a week.
MS has no solution at this time, but they want you to reinstall windows, but
no other software.

wtf is the point of having a computer?
this cost me a week of vacation

thanks Tom. When you say "reinstall XP" i hope you don't mean format first,
just reload xp from repair when you boot with the CD. I have managed to do
all the updates for my PC because if you allow it to do the update you then
get the proper updates page and all works OK. Its jsut that next reboot you
have to instal the installer again. When will MS get things right first go (
and more importantly issue a fix for this problem

No, I already did a full repair, only to cause me a weeks work to get it
working again.

They want to fresh format, install, and install NO other software, virsu
protection or firewalls.

I am an IP design engineer and tried to make them understand that you need
to find the problem, cause and solution, not simply bypass it and never know
what was wrong.
I also tried to make them realize they have many people with this problem
and that they need to fix it...

I have manually downloaded the installer and ran the setup and then the
box seems to recognize that it was installed.

yeah, now try to install any program and see if it says "Access denied".
