I have been clean installing Windows XP and Messenger Live 2009. Now every
time I start Messenger I get some installer window with a progress bar,
after which finally Messenger starts. Is this normal? What can I do about
it?

Furtermore: in Messenger I'm getting an (i) information that I have one
invitation.
When I click the link, I get a web page which says there are NO new
invitations. Pfff....

Gosh, and I was hoping I'd have my apps run without this sort of mischief in
my "clean" Windows install...

Greetings,

Have you modified Messenger at all? It is normal in that any Windows Installer-based
shortcut will do a quick "check" on itself, and if it determines there's a problem, will
attempt a repair (the installer window you're seeing).

In general, the easiest way to fix it is to simply uninstall Messenger and then reinstall it,
but depending on what the problem is, you can also just head over to the \Program
Files\Windows Live\Messenger and make a shortcut for msnmsgr.exe then use that shortcut
instead.

The invitation thing happens from time to time, it will clear on its own (server-based
stuff).

They never make it easy for you do they?

The new shortcut has the same problem. When I have A LOT of time, I'll
attempt uninstalling and installing...

Every day again "I have an invitation."
The main advantage of new versions seems to be new chaos...

Thanks, but... in the article I don't see this applies to 'Messenger'?

Hi,

Actually, the tool applies to anything installed using the Windows Installer and for
Messenger, my ZapMessenger (http://messenger.jonathankay.com/redir/zapmessenger.asp) does the
same thing. Although ZapMesseger tries a normal uninstallation first, which probably will be
successful and you would have to re-install anyway.

There are some [possible] problems with just removing your Windows Installer reference for
Messenger, such as not being able to apply patches (note that with the exception of one beta,
they've never used this capability) and Microsoft or other third-party applications might
query the Windows Installer references to make decisions (enabling Messenger capabilities,
updates, even security fixes etc.).

This probably doesn't apply to you personally, but I'm mentioning it here for future
newsgroup searchers -- the proper solution is to uninstall and reinstall if you want a
healthy working Messenger installation.
