I have a fix. It's actually right below this article in the newsgroup
entitled "Windows Update Frustration" Though we don't appear to get the
error message, it would appear that many of these problems could be related
to an improper registration of the Win Update service. I went through the
service shutdown, re-registering and service startup as outlined, and it
immediately began to work again.
