Installing BITS v 2.0

I downloaded the update BITS 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 without a problem or error
message - I have gone through the installation process without an error
message, but my automatic update still prompts me to install the update -
anyone know what I am supposed to do.

I am just your average home user (ok a little above average, but computers
are not my specialty.)

Please see if the following info helps.

Symptoms

* Same Updates are repeatedly offered thru Windows Update (WU)/Auto Update
(AU). After the user installs the update, WU/AU report that installation was
successful, but scanning again shows the same updates. This cycle repeats.
Reboot doesn't solve the problem.

* KB842773 (BITS 2.0 package) will most likely be listed as the update being
repeatedly offered because it is a mandatory update on WU V5 and hence will
be the 1st update to be detected/installed repeatedly

Problem

There are some viruses/Trojans that are on the internet which causes some
processes with exe name as update.exe to be killed immediately. When a
process is killed, the exit code of the process is controlled by the caller
which kills the process. If the exit code from the killed install process is
0, then AU assumes that the install was successful.

Because of this, AU shows that the install was successful even though the
install did not succeed. Since no files would have been modified, the
updates are re-detected again and shown to the users.

Examples of viruses that kill update.exe are

W32/Bagle.X =>

Backdoor.Assasin.10 =>
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...r.assasin.html

Resolution

* Clean-up the machine using some good anti-virus software that can detect
and delete these viruses/trojans. After that, attempt the installs again
using WU/AU.

Note: This should not be seen as me recommending anti-virus software for
cleaning up any viruses, because the only completely safe way of cleaning up
a machine is to clean-install from a clean source (usually original CD).
This is because you never know what happened to your machine during the time
the virus was infected.

* If you don't have anti-virus software, Microsoft provides free anti-virus
software that can be used for 1 year from
